  • The actual secret to live a healthy life

To live a healthy life, you basically need:

    • enough sleep
    • enough hydration
    • enough physical activity
    • a balanced diet
    • enough luck to not have a debilitating disease or disorder
    • enough money
    • a dense enough social life

And probably a couple more of other things.

As you can see, this list is boring. It’s mostly common sense, backed by vast amounts of scientific evidence. There’s no silver bullet, no magic trick, no hidden secret, no killer this nor ancient knowledge that.

The fact this list is boring explains why the wellness industry has to repeatedly come with the wildest bullshit: the promise of accessing some hidden knowledge is a powerful narrative to keep its potential customers/preys hooked and engaged. How many followers a wellness influencer reminding people to drink enough water could gain, compared to a wellness guru pretending that they know some mysterious ancient miracle recipe that unlock the secret of eternal youth?

You probably heard the news that unless new financial backers are found, the Deutsche Post Foundation will shut down IZA at the end of 2025. It’s a devastating development for economics and economic research in Germany, especially at a time when the Trump administration is severely censoring and defunding academia in the United States.

The Financial Times covered the story in the following piece.

It’s obviously not the main point of the FT piece, but it’s notable that the piece quotes several Bluesky posts published by economists.
